History of six-word memoir:
Six-Word Memoirs, is a project founded by the online storytelling magazine SMITH Magazine. Like SMITH Magazine, Six-Word Memoirs seek to provide a platform for storytelling in all its forms. Similar to the overall aim of SMITH Magazine, Six-Word Memoirs are participatory in nature, and welcomes contributions from all its readers. After the magazine, 6 word memoirs took off and published several book: Six-Word Memoirs by Teens Famous and Obscure, Six Word Memoirs on Love and Heartbreak and many more.
What is a memoir?
It is related to the word “memory”. Our memories make up our life story.
I am challenging you to write your life story in six words. Yes, just six! No more, no less. Each memoir must contain six words. Since you only have six words, I encourage you to use mainly nouns and verbs. It does not have to be a complete sentence, but it can not be six unrelated words. You are not making a list of words that describe you, you are writing six words centered around one main idea. Use powerful words--you get only six.
Pre-Write: list several topics, memories, or personality traits that could be used in your six word memoir. Use the template to get you thinking.
1st Draft: Using your pre-write, you should select one or two of those ideas to expand into six words. Write your six word memoir--use the examples listed in pre-write template to get you thinking
Self-Edit: Make at least one type of change--word choice, varying sentences, or punctuation
2nd Draft: Conference with me
Final & Publication: Create a powerpoint slide with six-word memoir and background picture. Email your slide to me
Optional Publication: You may submit your six-word memoir
